The business at hand is urgent - Val Wood Geiger at COP 26
Val is the founder of Learn with Grandma, and our PIONeer liaison in Wales. She’s been attending COP 26 and posting about her experience. Watch her daily report here. We received Val’s first missive as she made her way to Glasgow to the biggest conference ever held in the United Kingdom. “I am travelling up to Scotland tomorrow. A long journey! 4 different changes + dreadful storms
between England and Scotland - with the possibility of bus replacement!” She’s been updating every day. Val’s leading our Global 50/50 PIONeer Online conversation on 13 December – watch for the invitation. Sign the petition here.
The need for digital inclusion and digital equity is pervasive!
The right to Digital Equity for All Ages was reinforced throughout the world as organizations and institutions marked the UN’s International Day of Older People on 1 October and reinforced the vital importance of high quality digital access for all. You can catch up here. Our own Global PIONeer 50/50 global conversation, Digital
Inclusion for Older People, drew participants from as far afield as New Zealand and India.
The subject of digital inclusion was again on the agenda at the Age Friendly Universities’ “Engaging Ageing 21 -- The Future of Ageing and the Silver Economy”, a 3-day virtual conference organized by Dublin City University (the founding member of the Age Friendly Universities Association). The Pass It On Network was well represented among the speakers by Jan Hively, Moira Allan, Richard Adler, keynote speaker on Digital Inclusion, and
Manish Rai, from Hyderabad, India. We were all very happy to reunite with Marie Carroll, a PIONeer follower from Dublin.

George Lorenzo
Introducing an “old soul” whose plain-spoken wisdom is readily accessible for Global PIONeers
George Lorenzo is a relatively new member of the Pass It On Network. His background is in freelance education writing (for 30 years) through a website service he runs called Educational Pathways ( www.edpath.com). He also operates two other website properties: “Old Anima: Unique Resources for Older Adults” ( www.oldanima.com), launched when he turned 62 in 2015; and “Workforce Monitor: Summarized Resources on Credentials and the Future of Work” ( www.wfmonitor.com), co-published with George Washington University, and launched in January 2021 at the age of 67.
Read more about this self-employed “late bloomer” who has struggled with ageism in the workplace. He offers a lot of resources on his websites to help older adults find meaningful employment. As important, he has shown in his own life that the basic message is: “Keep on trying.”

Living Positively with Dementia - Where do you stand in dealing with dementia?
Three people, three points of view; share yours in our Forum on the Global Connector
|
Peter Whitehouse: We can work collectively to minimize the impact of dementia on the quality of lives.
|
Margie van Zyl Chapman: Let’s keep those living with dementia in our conversations. We can learn from them. After all, it could be us. The research shows that 1 in 3 of the population will be living with dementia.
|
Kate Swaffer who soldiers on, 10 years after being diagnosed: "The fear and loneliness I experienced when first diagnosed, mostly due to the stigma and attitudes of others, was truly devastating."

Integrity
Gustavo Boog, a PIONeer educator from Sao Paolo in Brazil, explores the question of integrity. Integrity has to do with owning one’s own truth, acting upon it, and accepting the consequences. Read more in his richly meaningful essay on this topic.

Leading Questions for YOU from Nigeria
Nigeria is tackling the ageing of its population as a positive challenge. The first major step was to establish enabling policies and then to launch the country’s Senior Citizens Center under the direction of Dr. Emem Omokaro, who has lost no time moving into top gear. “Our
ageing population is vital to our economy – first, as contributors, and second, as service users when our years weigh in. As part of building our 10-year strategic plan, we’re exploring how the private sector can contribute.” View video here.
