Strasbourg to Prague to New York The
rights of older people, brain plasticity, and discovery of what’s happening around the globe drive the Pass It On Network and this month has been particularly rich. We joined Margaret Young at GAROP’s Global Rally on March 1. We were at the European Council in Strasbourg, where REIACTIS (International Research Network on Age, Citizenship and Social-Economic Integration) heard preliminary findings of the RIDPA (International Research on the Rights of Older People) study from 18 countries from
China to Chile on human rights abuses suffered by older people during COVID. We then over-night bused to Prague, where PION and Old’Up joined EURAG members from 15 European countries to explore using brain power to empower people to realize their potential. We joined in the 25th anniversary of the Czech Memory Training Centre, created and run by Dana Steinova, EURAG’s secretary general. Our Global 50/50 online conversation with Dr Kathryn Braun, and Dr Cullen Hayashida whetted our appetite to discover leading-edge strategies for an ageing society in Singapore and South Korea in the heart of the fastest ageing region in the world. We’ll be in New York, the UN’s 13th session of the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing from 2-6

PION has enjoyed rich relationships with interns in the past and we’re happy to welcome Dean Marunza, from Zimbabwe, who will be with us for 6 months beginning in April. Dean’s studying for a PhD with Portsmouth University, UK. He has two master’s degrees, one in development from Midlands State University,
Zimbabwe, and one in International Studies from Coventry University. "I am a passionate researcher in contemporary development”, he says, and his commitment to date certainly proves this. Dean works closely with the United Nations Volunteers. He has done sterling work with youth in Zimbabwe and co-founded a registered Youth network, Awareness Africa Trust. |
Street Children He works with vulnerable members of several communities including street
children in Harare. He advocates for their empowerment through education and youth participation in nation building. He coordinates and organizes dialogue meetings with Government and Non-government stakeholders, dialogue sessions with tertiary students, human rights awareness campaigns in high density [low income] communities. On a lighter note, his favorite color is blue, his favorite food is pasta with a penchant for
lasagna and all the better if there’s a Reggae beat in the background. We know our community of PIONeers will welcome exchanging with him over the months ahead. |
GAROP’S Global Rally – Support for a UN Convention on Older Rights Dozens of events around the globe focused on older people’s rights during GAROP’S global rally 27 February to 5 March building pressure as we come up to the UN’s 13th session of the Open-ended working group on Ageing in New York from 3-6 April. The launch event run by Margaret Young, head of GAROP’s
Steering Committe, and our PIONeer from Canada, attracted advocates from around the globe. Dr. Claudia Mahler, UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, sums it all up: |
